Armed violence, weapons availability and human security: A view of the state of the play and options for action

In her paper Cate Buchanan from the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue suggests that sustainable security objectives that balance the interests of states and people can be demonstrated in the area of small arms control, reduction and use. A people first approach has much to offer. Buchanan suggests action – among others - in the working to lessen demand, taking weapons out of circulation, addressing misuse and in reforming security sector. Specific needs of the children are to be addressed in this context and attention should be given to those suffering of gun violence injuries and disabilities.
