Violence against women – Sexual violence during wartime

In her paper, Radhika Coomaraswamy, formerly the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, discusses in her paper the causes of violence against women during wartime, analyses how women are affected by war and describes the international standards of accountability that exists today. Additionally she discusses the humanitarian implications of sexual violence during wartime and makes several recommendations on how the system of accountability for sexual violence as war crimes and crimes against humanity should be strengthened and how the violence against women should be made a high priority by various stakeholders, including international and national humanitarian agencies.
