Human Security Track at ACUNS meeting
The global interest to human security has not always elicited a coherent, concerted, or sustained global response, says Fen Osler Hampson, Convenor of the Track on Human Security. The multiple problems of human security in the 21st century can be resolved only with integrated approaches and only if victims of insecurity are empowered to cope with their own circumstances. Hampson argues that attention should be turned to human security specifically in the context of “communities at risks”. Focus should be put on the multiple risks that jeopardize individuals and communities experience in their daily lives – risks that emanate from patriarchal family structures, gender inequalities, gang-based violence, civil conflict and unstable economic, social and environmental conditions. Hampson also argues that the key challenge is in identifying real-world policy strategies and political mechanisms that can be implemented on the ground with local public engagement and participation. He spoke on the Challenge to Human Security in the 21st Century in Academic Council of the United Nations System (ACUNS) Annual General Meeting June 30, 2004 in Geneva.
