Co-chairs:
Mr. Erkki Tuomioja, the Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs (2000-). Mr. Tuomioja was first elected to parliament in 1970 and his other appointments include Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee (1991-1999), Chairman of the Grand (European Affairs) Committee (1995-1999), Minister of Trade and Industry (1999-2000), and Chairman of the SDP parliamentary group (1996-). Before being elected to parliament Mr. Tuomioja worked as a journalist. He was also Deputy Mayor in Helsinki 1979-91. He has a Ph.D. in political science, B.Sc. in economics and he holds a lectureship in political history.
Mr. Jakaya M. Kikwete, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation in the United Republic of Tanzania since November 1995. Mr.
Kikwete is a member of Tanzania Parliament since 1988 todate. His other
appointments include: Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals (1988-1990),
Minister for Water, Energy and Minerals (1990-1994) and Minister for Finance
(1994-1995). He has also held the following positions: Chairman of the Board
of Governors of the East African Development Bank (1995), Chairman of the
Group of 77 (1997), Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation
of African Unity (OAU)- 1997 and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of
the East African Community (EAC). Currently he is the Chairman of the
Southern African Development Community (SADC). Minister Kikwete is a retired
Officer of the Tanzanian Army. He is a graduate of Economics from the
University of Dar es Salaam.

Ms. Maria Livanos Cattaui, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce, ICC (since 1996). Before joining ICC, Ms. Cattaui worked with the World Economic Forum in Geneva where she first became a member of the Executive Board, then Managing Director. She serves on the boards of the International Youth Foundation, the International Crisis Group, the International Centre for Research on Women, the Council of Women World Leaders, the Center for Strategic & International Studies. She is a graduate of Harvard University.
Mr. John Evans, Secretary General, Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD, Paris. Prior to joining TUAC, Mr. Evans has worked as Research Officer in the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) in Brussels, Industry Secretary at the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical and Technical Employees (FIET) in Geneva and Assistant in the Economic Department of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in London. He has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University (1973).
Ms. Susan George, the author of ten books, was born in the United States, lives in Paris and acquired French citizenship in 1994. She is Associate Director of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam, Vice-President of Attac France. Susan George's academic degrees are in French/Government (B.A.Smith College, USA); Philosophy (Licence ès Philsophie, Sorbonne) and Political Studies (Doctorate, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, University of Paris). Her current work concerns 'globalisation' particularly the World Trade Organisation, international financial institutions and North-South relations. She helped to lead the campaign in France to defeat the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) and is now engaged in the campaign to democratise the WTO.
Ms. Heba Handoussa is one of the commissioners of the World Commission on
the Social Dimension of Globalization and the former Managing Director of
the Economic Research Forum for the Arab countries, Iran and Turkey.
Professor Handoussa is also a member of the Shura Council, Egypt's Upper
House of Parliament. An economist by training, Professor Handoussa taught at
the American University in Cairo and was subsequently appointed as Vice
Provost. She has served as an advisor to the Egyptian government and
consultant to the World Bank. In 2000 she was elected member of the Board of
the Central Bank of Egypt. Her numerous research publications cover the
areas of structural adjustment, industrial policy and foreign aid,
institutional reform and comparative development models.
Prince El Hassan bin Talal, President of the Club of Rome. Formerly, he has chaired the Jordan committees overseeing the development plans between 1973-1990. He has served as Chairman of the Policy Advisory Commission for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (1999-2002), as Member of the Executive Committee of the International Crisis Group, Honorary Member of UNESCO World Commission on Culture and Development, Member of the Committee of UNESCO International Interreligious Advisory Committee, and Member of the Informal Advisory Group to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. He is also a President of the Board of Directors for the Center for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the University of Oklahoma and Member of the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Washington D.C. He has graduated from the Christ Church, Oxford University with a B.A. in Oriental Studies, followed by an M.A. He has also received several honorary degrees.
Ms. Irene Khan, Secretary General, Amnesty International - International Secretariat. Ms. Khan has formerly worked as Legal Assistant at the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva. In 1980 she joined the UNHCR providing guidance to field offices on refugee protection issues and also worked in several regions of the world, including South-East Asia, Pakistan, UK and the Republic of Ireland, in various capacities. Within the UNHCR she held positions of Senior Executive Officer at the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, Chief of Mission at UNHCR Office India, Head of UNHCR Centre for Documentation and Research, responsible for the publication "State of the World's Refugees", and Deputy Director of the Department of International Protection. Ms. Khan has studied law at the University of Manchester and Harvard Law School, specializing in public and international law and human rights.
Mr. Martin Khor, Director of the Third World Network, Maleysia. Mr. Khor has been the Director of the Third World Network since 1998. An economist by profession, he has worked previously as a lecturer in Economics at the Science University of Malaysia and since 1978 as Research Director in the Consumer's Association of Penang, Malaysia. He is also a member of the UN Secretary-General Task Force on Environment and Human Settlements since 1997, the Working Group of Experts on the Right to Development under the UN Commission on Human Rights, and a member of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry's National Committee on Multilateral Trade Issues in Malaysia. Mr. Khor is an editor and columnist for several papers, such as the Third World Economics and Third World Resurgence, and also an author of numerous books. He has graduated from the University of Cambridge and University of Malaysia.
Mr. Poul Nielson, Former Commissioner, European Commission. Mr. Nielson has served in the Danish Parliament as an MP for the Social Democratic Party (1971-73, 1977-84, 1986-). He has also served as Delegate to the UN General Assembly (1972 and 1977), Minister for Energy (1979-1982) and Minister for Development Co-operation (1994-1999). He has been Member of the European Commission in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid since September 1999. He also serves in the boards of several Danish companies. He graduated in political science from Arhus University 1972.
Ms. Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), holds the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. She is the first Saudi Arabian national to head a United Nations agency. She took office on 1 January 2001, succeeding Dr. Nafis Sadik, who retired after nearly 14 years as Executive Director. Ms. Obaid previously served for two years as the Director of the Division for Arab States and Europe at UNFPA. Prior to joining the Fund, she was Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) from 1993 to 1998. She was the Chief of the Social Development and Population Division from 1992 to 1993 and Senior Social Affairs Officer, with various responsibilities, from 1975 to 1992.
Ms. Ann Pettifor, Director, Jubilee Research/New Economics Foundation. Born in South Africa, Ms. Pettifor worked in the 1980s at the headquarters of the British Labour Party and in the 1990s in the as a parliamentary adviser and in the private sector as an adviser to chief executives in the energy, retail and property sectors. With Jubilee 2000, she developed a coalition of 90 organisations and movements in 50 countries. She works as a Programme Director in the New Economies Foundation and heads the JubileePlus programme and has acted as an advisor to the UN Human Development Reports 2002 and 2003. Ms. Pettifor took her degree in politics and economics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Newcastle.
Mr. Vijay Pratap, Convenor, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam/World Social Forum India. Mr. Pratap is a founding member of Lokayan, the organization that received the Right Livelihood Award in 1985. He also co-edits the Lokayan-bulletin and is Chairperson of People's Transport Council of Lokayan and a founder member of the People's Campaign Against Globalization, a rainbow coalition formed as a result of a national convention in March 2001. He is an organiser of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, VK (Global Forum for Responsibility towards Democracy), which is a forum for evolving a comprehensive view on democracy that is simultaneously rooted both nationally and globally. Moreover, he is also Convenor of Dialogues for Democratic Consolidation in South Asia at the Insitute for Comparative Democracy, the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS).
Mr. Konrad Raiser, Former Secretary General of the World Council of
Churches. In 1969 Mr. Raiser joined the staff of the World Council of
Churches (WCC) in Geneva and in 1973 he was appointed Deputy General
Secretary. From 1993 until 2003 he held the position of the Secretary
General. He has also worked as Professor of Systematic Theology and
Ecumenics at Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Ruhr
(Bochum) and as director of the faculty's Ecumenical Institute. Later he has
served on the presidium of the German Protestant Kirchentag, an adviser and
member of the drafting committees at the European Ecumenical Assembly in
Basle, and the WCC's World Convocation on Justice, Peace and the Integrity
of Creation in Seoul. He has concluded studies in Protestant Theology at
universities in Tübingen, Heidelberg and Zürich and studies in Sociology and
Social Psychology at Harvard University. He earned his Ph.D in 1970 from
Tübingen and holds honorary doctorates from the Budapest Theological Academy
and the University of Geneva.
Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa is the Executive Chairman of MCI (Millenium
Consolidated Investments) as well as the single largest shareholder in the
company. He is a member of the advisory boards of the Sanlam Development
Fund and the AIF Africa Infrastructure Fund, Chairman of Johnnic Hodings
Limited and a board member of SAB plc, First Rand Limited and SASRIA. He is
the past Chairman of the Black Empowerment Commission, past Deputy Executive
Chairman of New Africa Investments Limited and has held various leadership
positions in the National Union of Mineworkers. Cyril is also known for the
pivotal role he played as a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted
South Africa's constitution. He is National Executive Committee Member and
former Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC). Mr.
Ramaphosa has a bachelor's degree in law from the University of South
Africa.
Mr. Jean-Francois Rischard, Vice president for Europe, World Bank. Mr. Rischard has been with the World Bank since 1993 as Vice-President for Finance, Private Sector Development and Infrastructure, Director of Investments, Chief of Financial Policy and Analysis and since 1998 Vice-President for Europe. Mr. Rischard was the World Bank's first-ever vice president for Europe. In his role as chief spokesperson in Europe, he represents the Bank in its high-level relationships and partnerships with constituencies in eighteen European countries. He is also the founder and Chairman of the InfoDEV consortium, founding Commissioner of the Global Information Infrastructure Commission and has launched the Business Partnership for Development Program. He has graduated in Economics from Aix-Marseille, with MBA from Harvard and earned PhD in Law.
Ms. Mary Robinson, Director, Ethical Globalization Initiative and former President of Ireland. Before her election as President in 1990 she served as Senator, holding that office for 20 years. She was called to the bar in 1967, becoming a Senior Counsel in 1980, and a member of the English Bar (Middle Temple) in 1973. She also served as a member of the International Commission of Jurists (1987-1990) and the Advisory Commission of Inter-Rights (1984-1990). Ms. Robinson became High Commissioner for Human Rights in 1997, following her nomination to the post by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. She has recently completed her term as High Commissioner. As president, she was the first Head of State to visit Somalia following the crisis there in 1992, receiving the CARE Humanitarian Award in recognition of her efforts. Educated at Trinity College, she also holds law degrees from the King's Inns in Dublin and from Harvard University.
Ms. Li Shantong, Director General of the Research Department of Development Strategy and Regional Economy of the Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council. She is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Born in 1944, she studied mathematics at Peking University and graduated with BA (1968) and MS (1981). Ms Li joined DRC in 1981 and has since played a key role in several joint projects with the World Bank, UNDP and the Asian Development Bank, related to the economic development of China.
Ms. Clare Short, entered the House of Commons in 1983 as the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for the Midlands constituency of Birmingham Ladywood. She has been a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party since 1988, Chair of the NEC Women's Committee (1993-96) and Chair of the NEC International Committee since 1996. She is also Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Socialist International since 1996. From 1996 until the 1997 General Election she was opposition spokesperson on overseas development. She was Secretary of State for International Development from 1997 up to her resignation in May 2003. She has graduated in Political Science from the University of Leeds.
Ms. Martha Suplicy, Former Mayor of São Paulo, President of United
Cities and Local Governments, and Congresswoman. Ms. Suplicy
has been the president of the Inter-American Parliamentary Group on
Population and Development and she has been a Member of Parliament for the
95-98 term. She is also a member of National Board of Directors and
Executive Board of the Worker's Party (PT). Founding member and ex-President
of Florestan Fernandes Institute of Public Policies (1999-2000), which aims
to discuss solutions and alternatives for the City of São Paulo and the
metropolitan region. Founder and ex-President of Tver Group, a NGO with the
main objective of stimulating a critical vision of television programming
and defending the rights of television spectators. Founder of GTPOS-Work and
Research Group on Sexual Orientation, which develops qualification projects
and workshops for health and education professionals in the area of
sexuality and AIDS prevention. In 1982, Ms. Suplicy received the "Woman of
the Year" medal from the National Council of Brazilian Women. Ms. Suplicy is
apsychologist, she graduated from Pontifícia Universidade Católica-SP
(Pontifical Catholic University at São Paulo), obtained a Master's degree in
Clinical Psychology from Michigan State University and a Post-Graduate
degree from Stanford University.
Mr. Peter Sutherland, European Chairman of the Trilateral Commission,
Chairman and of Goldman Sachs International, Chairman of BP p.l.c., and
former Director-General of the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade and
the World Trade Organization. Mr. Sutherland serves on the Board of
Directors of Investor AB, Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and The Royal
Bank of Scotland Group plc. He is also associated with the following
organizations: World Economic Forum as Foundation Board Member, The
European Institute (USA) as Director, The Conference Board as Global
Counsellor, and as a member of the Chief Executive's Council of
International Advisers, Hong Kong. He was also a Commissioner of the UN
International Commission on Human Security (March 2001- May 2003). Of Irish
nationality he was educated at Gonzaga College, University College Dublin
and Honorable Society of the King's Inns, graduating in Civil Law. He has
received several awards and honorary doctorates.
Mr. Strobe Talbott, President of the Brookings Institution (since 2002). Mr. Talbott has worked more than 20 years with Time Magazine as reporter, Washington Bureau Chief, Editor and Foreign Affairs Columnist. He has also been with the State Department as Ambassador, Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for the new independent states of the former Soviet Union and Deputy Secretary of State. He serves as Director of Council on Foreign Relations and in the boards of the North America Executive Committee, Trilateral Commission, Aspen Strategy Group and American Association of Rhodes Scholars. He is also associated with the following institutes: the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is a graduate of the Yale University and Oxford University.
