Friends of the Helsinki Process

In its final report the high level Helsinki Group as well as the Helsinki Conference 2005 called for follow-up to the Helsinki Process in order to further the implementation of recommendations made by the Helsinki Process as well as by other international commissions.

To answer this call, Finland and Tanzania brought together a group of "Friends of the Helsinki Process" governments, which included the governments of Algeria, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Hungary, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

The group of Friends of the Helsinki Process acted as a "sounding board" for the recommendations made by the Helsinki Group and Tracks by assessing them and selecting some of them to be taken forward with the help of Road Maps for further action.

In implementing these Road Maps, the Friends cooperated with other governments and stakeholders.
